Who pays what?

by Aretha
(Reading, PA)

I rear ended someone in a car I borrowed just for an errand. The owner of the other car is claiming it is totaled, and only has comprehensive insurance. There was no damage to the car I was driving.

I tried to offer her Kelley blue book value for the car which is barely 1,400, but she is insisting I pay 7,000. Now, her car is a 1993 ford probe with over 120,000. what am I really supposed to pay?

Answer:

Hello Aretha,

You are supposed to pay fair market value. Please see our notes on "total loss." Your evaluation of a total loss vehicle should not be any different than the insurance company.

Thank you.
