Unisured Car in my name, friend is using | Liability of owner

by David
(Appleton, WI)

I have an uninsured car in my name that I do not drive. I have a friend that wants to borrow the car but he also has no insurance.

Can I be held liable if he has a mishap just for owning the car? (note: Wisconsin does not require auto insurance)

Answer:

Hello David,

Yes, you can. You know that your friend has no insurance and you also know that Wisconsin laws require insurance. Should you loan the car with full knowledge of this facts, you are being negligent for your disregard of the law.

The car must be insured and the vehicle owner can be held liable for mishaps and/or accidents.

Good Luck,
