Police report required to file a claim?

by Todd

Is a police report required when filing a claim with your insurance company if another vehicle was not involved - in this case it was car against pole, no damage to the pole but damage to the vehicle.

Nothing funny involved - just trying to avoiding hitting an animal and side swiped a pole. Thanks for your help.

Hi Todd,

Usually a police report is not necessary unless you have a phantom vehicle claim (A vehicle was coming, you tried to avoid, you went on the ditch with damage to your car, but the other vehicle left the scene and the two vehicles never collided).

Some insurance companies require you to have one, but most don't. You just have to talk to them and show them your damage. If they have questions, they can go look at the pole.

Good Luck,
