My stolen car was found in Mexico. AAA says they can fixed it but can I ask them to totaled the car? I do not trust this car anymore since there might be hidden damages
My car (1999 Honda civic) got stolen from Long Beach and found 2 days later in Mexico.
My insurance company is AAA in southern California. My deductible was $100. They are saying that the only things missing are the stereo (aprox $600) and the battery, but they are not taking to consideration all my belongings that where inside the car (golf clubs, college textbooks, Bluetooth, etc..aprox $1500 total).
They are saying that since I don't have home renters insurance, they do not cover for the loss of anything inside of the car. Is this true? or How could I make them pay for it?
The car was a stick shift, and I'm afraid the car thief didn't know how to drive a stick shift(as more Californians don't either) and damaged the transition in a way that might not be detectable at first during a car inspection.
Also, my job requires me to have a car and I would not like my car to breakdown while I'm working , and get fired due to it. I simply do not trust this car anymore since there might be more hidden damages that I would have to pay by myself later on.
I would much rather to have the car totaled.
how can I make them totaled the car? I've read so far to ask for a total teardown, a letter of guarantee that my car will be completely functional, and file a diminished value or diminution of value claim as the stolen and recovered record might show in Carfax and get less for the car if I were to sell it, and maybe this will make them totaled the car because the don't want to deal with all this. What else can I do? are all these steps correct?

Hello,
You are in a hard situation my friend. Property damage is not covered (the belongings you quoted: golf clubs, college textbooks, Bluetooth, etc.) by your auto policy. You need some other insurance (renters, homeowners, special personal property coverage).
You want your car totaled? But why? The only damage is a battery and a stereo system? You other concerns are reasonable, but not actual damages. What if the thief did now who drive a stick shift? I mean, the vehicle made it to Mexico. Someone knew how to at least make it go.
Unfortunately, the insurance company duty here is to fix your car (not to pay for lost employment or possible damage). Do make sure the vehicle is properly inspected.
