Insurance: Medical vs. Auto? Who pays?

by Lynn

My medical insurance is asking me for details about whether I was in an auto accident (I was and I have auto insurance coverage).

As far as I'm concerned it's a moot point--I pay them to cover my medical bills. I live in Virginia. Am I obligated to fill out the survey I received from the medical insurance company?

Answer:

Hello Lynn

Yes you are. And it is not a moot point. You pay them to provide coverage according to an insurance plan (policy). That policy probably excludes injuries because of a car accident.

If they find out about the accident, they will request payment back or decline to pay your doctors. If you have PIP coverage or medical payments, it is better to have everyone know the true facts. You do not want to be prosecuted for insurance fraud.
