Insurance coverage - uninsured driver

by Charla Roberge
(Corpus Christi)

My son had a car accident 2 months ago and totaled his car. He was covered at the time. He broke his kneecap so he couldn't drive, so I took him off my ins policy.

He's now ready to start driving again. if my son is not on my insurance policy and he drives my car and gets in a wreck, will he be covered?

Answer:

It's unlikely. Coverage is granted for listed drivers and those who do not have access to the vehicle in a regular basis. The fact that your son has driven the vehicle before, and was in the policy, can give you a big problem in case of an accident.

If he is going to drive more than "once", then you should add him to the policy to be sure.

Good Luck,
